Sandra Cuesta presents a sound work entitled D.U.S.T. 1, activated intermittently through three daily presentations (12:00, 17:00 and 17:30).Conceived as a site-specific intervention, the work has been composed and modulated in close dialogue with the architectural and acoustic properties of the Arrieta fronton. Taking the impact and rebound of the pelota against the court walls as both its conceptual and rhythmic point of departure, the artist transforms the public space into a monumental resonating chamber.
Unlike earlier projects, in which Cuesta records environmental sounds for subsequent editing and sampling, D.U.S.T. 1 has been produced entirely through digital means. Using audio editing and sound synthesis software, the artist digitally recreates the dry percussive sound of the pelota striking the fronton wall. The resulting work gives form to a rhythmic abstraction that temporarily alters the spatial and functional perception of this everyday architecture.
